Specialist SEN Education from Early Years to Higher Education

Every child learns differently.
So we teach differently.

At Prime School Sintra, we believe that education should adapt to the child — not expect the child to adapt to education.

Our Sintra campus provides a nurturing, structured and highly personalised learning environment for children and young people who benefit from additional educational support.

But our commitment does not end when school ends.

One educational journey within the Prime community
Early Years→Primary→Lower Secondary→IGCSE→Sixth Form→BTEC / HND→University
From Early Years to University

Continuity, for the student
and for the family.

Prime School Sintra offers something particularly important to students with Special Educational Needs and their families: continuity.

Through Prime School and our partnership with Prime Technical Institute, students can follow an educational pathway that begins in Early Years and can continue through Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form into higher education and professional qualifications.

Students who are better suited to an applied or vocational pathway can progress through Pearson BTEC Higher National programmes delivered through Prime Technical Institute: the Higher National Certificate (HNC) at Level 4 and the Higher National Diploma (HND) at Level 5.

The HND can, subject to the requirements of the receiving university and programme, provide progression to a university top-up degree.

One educational journey. Different pathways. One community.

For many students with SEN, transitions between schools and educational environments can be particularly challenging.

Our aim is to reduce unnecessary disruption by creating continuity of relationships, expectations and educational philosophy throughout the student's journey.

From Early Years to HNC and HND

The same community, from the first years.

At the Sintra campus, specialist support sits inside the Cambridge pathway. A child can begin in Early Years and continue through Primary and Lower Secondary without changing school, or the way the school understands them.

From the first years

Early Years

Learning begins with play, language, movement and secure relationships. Days are short on noise and clear on routine.

Teachers watch how each child communicates, settles and explores, and adapt the pace, the space and the support around that.

The primary years

Primary

Reading, writing, mathematics and the wider Cambridge curriculum grow alongside communication, confidence and independence.

Classes stay small. Materials, explanations and targets are adapted, so progress is measured from each child's own starting point.

Before the next qualification

Lower Secondary

Subject learning becomes broader, with more attention to organisation, self-advocacy and working with others.

This is where a student and family can see the next step clearly: Cambridge IGCSE, or a practical BTEC Level 2 route in a subject they enjoy.

IGCSE years

Upper Secondary

Students work towards Cambridge IGCSE, or towards Pearson BTEC Level 2, the practical equivalent. Support stays personal: pace, materials and the number of subjects can be adapted.

Upper Secondary is the bridge from school subjects to a Level 3 qualification.

Sixth Form

Level 3 and A Levels

Cambridge A Levels are examined. Pearson BTEC Level 3 is assessed by assignments and is the A Level equivalent.

BTEC Level 3 can be taken in Arts, Sport, Business, Tourism or Health, with the same specialist support around the student.

Higher education

HNC and HND

After Level 3, Prime Technical Institute offers the Higher National Certificate at Level 4 and the Higher National Diploma at Level 5. Both are assignment-based.

The same areas continue: Arts, Sport, Business, Tourism and Health. The HND can lead to a university top-up or to employment, subject to the receiving university and programme.

At every stage, from Early Years to HND, the student has differentiated support. Teaching, materials and pace are adapted to how that student learns.

Where it helps, the school arranges consultations with partner specialists and with educational psychologists. Their guidance supports study in class and keeps home and school working in the same way.

A school designed around the individual

The education is built around the child.

For some children, a traditional educational environment can become overwhelming.

Large classes, rigid timetables, sensory overload, difficulties with communication or social interaction, and standardised approaches to learning can create unnecessary barriers.

Prime School Sintra offers another way. Our approach combines academic ambition with personalised educational support, emotional wellbeing and the development of practical life skills.

Depending on each pupil's individual profile, support may include learners with:

  • Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC)
  • ADHD and attention-related needs
  • Dyslexia and specific learning differences
  • Speech, language and communication needs
  • Social and emotional needs
  • Sensory processing differences
  • Executive-function challenges
  • Other additional learning needs

Admission and educational planning are always based on an individual assessment of the student's needs and on whether Prime School Sintra can provide an appropriate and beneficial educational environment.

Small classes. Personalised learning.

Meaningful inclusion starts with understanding.

We believe meaningful inclusion requires more than simply placing a child in a classroom.

It requires understanding how that child learns.

Our specialist approach can include small learning groups, individual learning plans, adapted teaching, structured environments and personalised progression targets.

Success is measured not only against age-related expectations, but also against each student's individual starting point and progress.

More than the next examination

Academic achievement matters. It is not the whole story.

Education should prepare young people for life. Academic development therefore sits alongside:

  • Communication
  • Social interaction
  • Emotional regulation
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Independence
  • Problem solving
  • Digital skills
  • Practical life skills
  • Employability
  • Preparation for adulthood

For one student, success may mean achieving excellent examination results and progressing to university.

For another, success may mean developing greater independence, completing a vocational qualification and progressing towards meaningful employment.

Both are successful educational outcomes.

Cambridge, BTEC and higher education

There is no single route to success.

Prime School Sintra can provide academic pathways through the Cambridge curriculum, while our partnership with Prime Technical Institute creates opportunities for students who may flourish through a more practical, career-focused educational route.

01
Cambridge Pathway
Early Years → Primary → Lower Secondary → IGCSE → A Levels → University
02
Applied and Vocational Pathway
BTEC Level 2 → BTEC Level 3 → HNC Level 4 → HND Level 5 → University top-up or employment
03
Individualised Pathway
A combination of academic, vocational, personal-development and life-skills learning designed around the individual student.
The objective
The objective is to find the right route for every student.
Preparing for life beyond school

Academic knowledge, with practical
and professional skills.

As students grow older, our focus increasingly includes preparation for adult life. Through Prime School Sintra and Prime Technical Institute, this may include preparation for:

  • University
  • Higher National Diplomas
  • Vocational education
  • Professional qualifications
  • Internships and work experience
  • Employment
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Independent or supported living
  • Active participation in the community
From support to independence

Skills and confidence to become as independent as possible.

Our ultimate objective is not simply to support students while they are at school. It is to progressively give them the skills and confidence to become as independent as possible.

That journey can begin with us in Early Years and continue into adulthood.

Early Years → School → HND → University → Career

One student. One individual pathway. One Prime community.

At the end of the school pathway

BTEC, HNC and HND.

Students who flourish through practical work can continue, with Prime Technical Institute, in the same subject. BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 are assessed by assignments. So are the HNC and the HND. There is no final examination at these stages.

School-level vocational route

BTEC Level 2 and Level 3

Level 2 is the IGCSE equivalent. Level 3 is the A Level equivalent. A student can begin after Lower Secondary and stay in one vocational area.

Level 2 can lead to Level 3. Level 3 can lead to the HNC.

Higher education

HNC Level 4 and HND Level 5

The Higher National Certificate is Level 4. The Higher National Diploma is Level 5. Both continue the subject started at BTEC.

The HND can, subject to the receiving university and programme, lead to a university top-up degree or to employment.

The same areas run through Level 2, Level 3, HNC and HND:

  • Arts
  • Sport
  • Business
  • Tourism
  • Health
A different environment can change everything

A child who struggles in one place
may flourish in another.

It is finding the right environment in which that ability can emerge.

At Prime School Sintra, we aim to provide that environment — from a child's first years of education through to preparation for university, employment and adult life.
